El domingo fue el recital de U2 aqui en Santiago...increible, Estadio Nacional lleno, y un show espectacular. Un poco antes de que apareciera U2 en el escenario, Ricardo Lagos, nuestro querido presi, llego al recital (si, tenemos un presi roquero), y todo el mundo se puso a aplaudir, casi como si hubiera aparecido Bono, jajajajaja. Tan buena onda es Ricky, que incluso hizo la ola con toda la galucha, y se gano mas aplausos por buena onda.

Hay lugares en el mundo en que es ilegal celebrar el dia de los enmorados...en arabia saudita, segun middle east online la gente tiene interes de comprar regalos para sus parejas, pero si lo hacen se arriesgan a ser atrapados por la policia religiosa, ya que la celebracion esta prohibida por ser de tradicion cristiana...asi que la compra de regalos se ha transforamdo en una operacion comando, en que la gente llega disfrazada y se avisan por celulares la llegada de los pacos. Asi que el pobre San Valentin sigue siendo perseguido...

Amerita comentar una noticia que encontre hoy en la tercera

Resulta que en el mundo hay un hongo letal que afecta a mis amigos los sapos y las ranas, aka anfibios, y segun unos colegas de la U North-West de Sudáfrica, la causa de que se hayan agarrado el hongo las ranas africanas, fue porque por 3 decadas (1930-1960) fueron usados como test de embarazo...yes, se les inyectaba orina de la sra. o srta. con dudas, y si la rana ovulaba era porque habia embarazo...esa onda...y al usar este test mundialmente, el trafico internacional de este animal hizo que el hongo se expandiera por la tierra, y ahora es una de las principales causas de la disminucion de anfibios en el mundo entero.

Esta rana tan usada en ciencias, ademas de andar repartiendo hongos, algunos investigadores irresponsables, cuando no las ocupan mas, o tienen muchas, etc, las sueltan, y ahi queda la cagada, ya que estas ranas son super agresivas (tienen garras en las patas) y se comen a las ranas nativas...y ahora mas encima me salen con que son fungicas cochinas contagiosas. Ojo que en Chile la rana esta presente, y cada dia se expande mas...

5 hábitos extraños de Pilon

Mi amigo quiltro patiperro que anda viajando por el mundo, me mando este meme en que tengo que contarle 5 habitos extraños en mi vida...Aqui van:

1. Solo como queso derretido, nada de andar comiendo quesito a mordiscos como los ratoncitos...a veces lo como en un estado que Javier llama "leche de queso". Esta es una de mis tantas mañas culinarias que podrian rebalsar este blog.

2. Me empiezan a dar ganas de almorzar cerca del mediodía, como las guaguas, cosa que para algunos es extraña, pero que en gringolandia pasaba piola porque alla todos almuerzan y comen temprano.

3. Necesito que circule el oxigeno para poder quedarme dormida, alguna ventanita abierta, o aunque sea la puerta del pasillo junta...sino me ahogo y no puedo dormir.

4. Evito tocar las manillas de las puertas de los baños publicos, y cuando me veo obligada a hacerlo siempre estan mojaditas...arggg. Para que decir de tirar la cadena en uno de esos baños, no puedo tocarla directamente, uso un pedazo de confort...esa es una de mis mañas en cuanto a germenes y limpieza se trata, que en general soy bien maniatica.

5. Tocarme los pies. Me saco los zapatos y me pongo a jugar con los dedos, a masajearme la planta (sera porque tengo una mama reflexologa?), lo que para algunos es bastante asqueroso, y se contradice bastante con el punto anterior de mi mania hacia los germenes, especialmente en esta epoca de chalas en que las patas estan mas cerca del suelo que nunca...pero bue..amo mis patitas!

Mis felcitaciones en el cyberespacio...Michelle Bachelet sera la futura presidenta de Chile!!!!! Espero que tenga un excelente mandato, y que demuestre a los machistas de este pais y del mundo, que una mujer puede hacer grandes cosas, incluso gobernar un pais tan lindo como este...Fue muy emocionante verla ayer dando su discurso triunfal...me ponia a pensar que a su papa lo mataron los milicos @#$%@%# y que ella ahora sera presidenta, que revancha!

discriminacion en navidad

Como puede haber alguien que no invite a la cena de navidad a su hijo, por el hecho de que este no sea catolico? No es la navidad una fiesta familiar, de encuentro, de compartir, de ser generoso? No dicen los catolicos: ama a tu projimo, no hagas lo que no quieres que te hagan a ti? Como un catolico rechaza a su hijo en navidad? Que tristeza mas grande saber que existen una madre sin corazon, que se dice catolica, pero de la boquita pa afuera...y que hace sufrir a su hijo enormemente.
El cura en la misa de nochebuena dijo: la navidad es una fiesta para todos, para los que creen y para los que no. Claro que si!

Es muy triste pasar la navidad lejos de la familia, yo lo se, porque lo vivi por 2 años seguidos...y ahora tuve una navidad muy feliz, por que estuve con mis papas, hermanos, abuelitos, primos y tios despues de mucho tiempo...solo me pone triste esa persona insensata, que rechazo a su hijo en navidad, que triste, no?

Estoy feliz porque gracias a estas fechas de reuniones familiares, muchos amigos que estan repartidos por el mundo han venido de visita a Santiago y los he podido ver despues de mucho tiempo...varios años han pasado sin vernos en algunos casos, y me alegra darme cuenta que a pesar del tiempo y la distancia, la amistad sigue igual...

Me han pasado cosas locas esta semana, asi que amerita comentarlo en el cyberespacio...El lunes entre a trabajar, pega nueva, vida nueva...bueno, el martes, entraron a robar a mi casa! segundo dia de dejar la casa sola, y los ladrones ya empezaron a celebrar. Afortunadamente no paso a mayores, por que la casa donde estoy es algo temporal, ya que me cambio a mi casita propia la proxima semana si todo sale bien, asi que estamos con la minimo y no alcanzaron a robar nada. El ladron se metio a nuestra casa desde la casa del vecino, que lamentablemente esta abandonada, y hasta puso una escalera el perla para pasarse la pandereta mas facilmente. Saco una ventana del riel, trepo por ahi, y llego a la cocina...ahi lo agarro el rayo de la alarma y salio arracando, dejando botado un cuchillo de cocina y mi toalla que estaba colgada en el patio en un meson. Cuando sono la alarma, llegaron los pacos y toda la onda, nosotros salimos de nuestras oficinas a mirar que habia pasado, los carabineros llegaron de nuevo ahora a revisar la casa por dentro y tambien la del veciono abandonada, cerraron la reja de entrada, rompieron la escalera que estaba apoyada en el muro y se idignaron que el dueno de la casa la tenga botada...
Tuvimos suerte, pero igual pasamos susto, y obviamente ahora andamos espirituados de que entren de nuevo...Y ahora, quien podra defenderme?

Ya estoy chata de las malas noticias ambientales en Chile. Batuco, Rio Cruces y Pascua-Lama me dan mucha rabia. Ahora para mas remate me entero de que CONAF metio las patas con RAMSAR, perjudicando a todas las organizaciones chilenas que quieran pedir subvenciones para poder proteger los humedales chilenos.La noticia salio el Lunes en la revista del campo de El Mercurio.

Resulta que los conafos le pidieron plata al fondo de pequenas subvenciones de la Convencion Ramsar para elaborar una estrategia nacional para la conservacion de humedales, y NUNCA LO PUBLICARON ni lo convirtieron en una estrategia oficial. Gracias a eso ahora Chile quedo suspendido de los fondos ambientales. Como si en Chile hubieran muchas fuentes de financiamiento para proyectos de proteccion al medio ambiente como para estar desperdiciandolas. Ayayayayayayyyyy

80 años de casados

Hoy descubri entre esas noticas freaks del diario, que en Inglaterra una pareja de viejitos (100 y 105 años) acaban de lograr el record de la pareja que ha durado mas años casados (80 años). Su secreto...no dormirse enojados.

Ojala que Javier y yo podamos sobrepasar ese record, y llegar a los 100 años de casados. Para eso yo tendria que llegar a los 122 años y Javier a los 125 y seria el año 2100. Tal vez con los adelantos de la tecnologia no sea tan raro poder llegar a esas edades...

Hello Again

I haven't written anything in a long time, because I decided to spend 100% of my time reading for my comps instead of writting here. I felt that time was going fast and that I needed to study as much as possible, so the strategy of writting about what I was reading went to hell. Anyway, I finally finished all the process succesfully, so now I can say that I am a Ph. D candidate. Bravo for me!

This chapter was written by J. W. Gibbons. He talks about the views that society has about amphibians, for example, that some people think that they cause warts, or that they associate them with snakes (or as some people, especially girls, have told me, that they are disgusting, putting and ugly face…). For people to care about amphibian conservation, education is important, especially hands-on experience. One important fact to use in public education is that amphibians are indicators of environmental stress (“canary on the mine”).

Human exploitation of amphibians: direct and indirect impacts

This chapter was written by Jensen and Camp. Direct impacts are use for food, pets, education and research, medicine, bait, and leather trade. Indirect impacts include the release of exotic amphibians in the wild by researchers, teachers and pet-owners; the effect of the decrease of amphibian in other animals, such as an increase the insects that they eat, and the decrease of the animals that eat them. Also the methods for catching amphibians can be very harmful, for example, pouring liquid bleach into streams to drive salamanders from under rocks. Most of the amphibians used for food are wild-caught. Global change: challenges facing amphibians

This chapter was written by Blaustein et al. They talk about global changes, like increase UV-B radiation (ozone depletion), pollution (CO2, CFCs, organofluorocarbons) global warming, and the effects that these have on amphibians. Some amphibians might be affected by global warming, for example, some are breeding earlier due to the increase in temperatures, and some have lost their habitat, like some amphibians in the cloud forest of Costa Rica. Drier weather makes breeding ponds shallower, so amphibians are more exposed to UV radiation, which can cause mutations and affect the immune system. Some amphibians respond negatively to increase UVB radiation, but some don’t: this can be explained by different capacities to repair UVB damage. UVB caused DNA damage is repaired by a photolyase enzyme (CDP-cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer) that has been found in higher levels in amphibians that are not affected by UVB. They talk about the research of Merila et al, which combines climate change, UV and amphibian breeding. They say that if amphibians are breeding earlier, then they are less exposed to UV radiation. The solution to all these global problems will come the day that pollution levels decrease. Some international treaties have the intention to decrease or end these problems, but, without the signature of the Kyoto Protocol by the US, it is less likely that CO2 levels will decrease soon. Also CFCs are very stable: estimates suggest that those in use today will continue to deplete the ozone layer for 50 to 150 years.

What is causing deformed amphibians?

Today I finished reading the chapter about amphibian deformations by S. Sessions. There is no consensus in the literature if the correct name would be malformations (caused by developmental errors) or deformations (caused by trauma), because on amphibians a trauma can cause a developmental error. There are different possible causes of deformities: Pollution (retinoids), UVB radiation, predation, parasites (trematode infections). Pollution and UVB radiation haven’t been well proved yet, but predation and parasites are the most probable causes. Predation in tadpoles, including cannibalism, (especially in early stages, when they haven’t lost the ability to regenerate tissues) has been proved to cause deformations. Parasites, specially the trematode Ribeiroia, forms cyst in tadpoles, which changes the arrangement of developing limb cells, causing polymelia (numerous limbs) and other deformities observed in natural amphibian populations. The reason why more deformations have been reported recently is not very clear: one hypothesis is that pollution or another type of habitat perturbation could be affecting the trematode cycle, increasing the number of parasites.

Since I started reading months ago, first I will try to quickly summarize what I know to date. Hopefully one day before my comps I will come back to those readings and talk about them more extensively. The topics for my comps are: ECOPHYSIOLOGY, COMMUNITY ECOLOGY, AMPHIBIAN CONSERVATION, STREAM ECOLOGY, and POPULATION BIOLOGY. First, I started reading:

Ecophysiology:
From the book Vertebrate ecophysiology (Bradshaw, 2003):
Chapter 5: Case studies of stress: incidence and intensity. From the book Behavioral approaches to conservation in the wild (Clemmons & Buchholz, 1997) Chapter 6: Conservation and the ontogeny of behavior (McLean) Chapter 11: The importance of social behavior studies for conservation (Komdeur & Deerenberg). As a quick summary: mostly what they talk about how corticosteroids are high when animals are stressed. Immune system is affected by stress…that’s why stressed people get sick. Mc Lean talked about behavioral responses to stress: choosing burrow places, e.g.

Community Ecology:
Null hypotheses in Ecology (Strong) from the Journal Synthese. Talked about how different is Ecology from other “hard” sciences (organismal, lots of different variables, high variability among individuals). Null hypothesis must be explicit in ecology, and most of the time that doesn’t happen at all. Research should be more experimental than observational or corroborative, where they don’t use null hypothesis.

Amphibian conservation:
I am almost finishing the book with that name, edited by Ray Semlitsch. About all the problems that amphibians are facing, and possible solutions. Pond breeding amphibians, N. America stream amphibians, terrestrial salamanders with direct development, amphibians in the new and old world tropics (sad stories: low budget for conservation and research, high treath by unsustainable use of natural resources, endemic unique species, etc, etc), natural population fluctuations and again null models to prove real declines, habitat destruction and alteration, invasive species, pathogens, infectious diseases and immune defenses, ecology and evolution of infectious diseases, effects of pesticides and deformations (I haven’t finish that chapter, so I will post more about it tomorrow).

Stream Ecology:
Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology Chapter 12: Community effects on ecosystem processes. Functional types, Abundance effects on ecosystems (Keystone species). Effects on resources (e.g. nitrogen fixing tree-Myrica), climate, disturbance regime, mutualism, top-down controls, diversity in functional types enhances efficiency of resource use and retention and stabilizes ecosystem processes, temporal variations, complementary use of resources.

Stream Ecology: Structure and Function of running waters
Chapter 2: Streamwater chemistry: determinants of riverwater chemistry: geology, rainwater, volcanic activity, pollution. Materials in river: Dissolved & Suspended; Organic & Inorganic. Dissolved gases: O2 y CO2. CO2 more soluble in water than O2. Concentrations change seasonally and daily. O2 higher in cold waters. High rainfall and runoff have less concentrated waters. Groundwater is more concentrated and has less O2 than surface water, and is less variable.
More CO2, less pH. Hardness relates to Mg and Ca concentration. Number of species commonly increases with hardness. Water of low ionic concentration support fewer fauna.
Chapter 3: physical factors of importance to the biota.
Current: physical adaptations, flow (laminar, transitional, turbulent), behavior, equations to describe streamflow (Re: UL/v= Bulk flow, Reynolds number).
Substrate: inorganic, organic, importance of detritus (more spp), Lithophilus (stones), psammophilus (sand), xhylophilus (wood), phytophylus (plants). Higher abundance in detritus, leaves, and cobbles.
Temperature: in small streams shading can alter summer temp. Stenothermal (narrow temp range animals), Eurythermal (wide range). Less temp, less 02, restricts organisms. Temp triggers development, influences egg developmental rate, juvenile growth, productivity. Less temp, high body mass (insects)
Oxygen: current influences 02, some animals have behaviors to have more O2 in slow moving waters or high temp.

The purpose of this blog is to help me study about the topics for my comps. I started reading in December, and I just had the idea to start this journal about the things I read every day, as a way to help me memorize and understand better, in a “fun” way. Also, I think it will be easier for me to find and read my old postings, than to read a notebook. My native language is Spanish, but since I am studying in the US and my exam will be in English, writing this will also help me to practice for my exam.
